Our Guttering Process

Assessment and Specification

We inspect gutter fall, bracket condition, joint integrity, downpipe flow and fascia board condition on every visit. A gutter fixed to rotten fascia will not stay fixed. We set gutter gradient correctly to a minimum fall of 1:500 and specify the correct profile size for the roof area — 112mm half-round for standard semis, 125mm or square profile for larger properties and valley outlets.

Guttering Costs

Gutter clearing £80–£150. Section repair £80–£200. Full uPVC replacement on a semi £300–£700. Cast iron repair and repaint £200–£500. All old material removed and disposed of. Written quote provided before any work starts.

Highfields: Victorian Roofing in Detail

Highfields was developed rapidly in the 1870s–1890s to house Leicester's expanding industrial workforce. The result is a dense grid of two and three-storey brick terraces on streets like Highfields Street, Tichborne Street, Melbourne Road and Springfield Road. The roofing specification throughout is almost identical: clay plain tile at approximately 35–40° pitch, open lead valleys where rear additions meet the main roof, lime mortar chimney stacks with two or three pots per property. This stock is now 120–140 years old. The tile itself is often still serviceable — the failures come in the supporting details. Lead valleys at 140 years are at fatigue point. Chimney mortar has eroded through multiple weather cycles. Flat roofs added during 1970s–80s kitchen extensions are at replacement age. Highfields requires traditional materials and methods throughout.

Our quoting process is straightforward and quick. The survey takes 20–45 minutes depending on the scope of work, and we provide a written itemised quote within 48 hours of the visit.

The written quote specifies every element of the work: scope, materials by name, access method, guarantee period and payment terms. We never start work without written acceptance of the quote. We don't require payment in full before work starts — a reasonable deposit of 10–25% covers material ordering, with final payment on satisfactory completion. We accept bank transfer and card payment and provide a VAT invoice on all work.

What Happens After You Accept a Quote

Once you accept the written quote, we schedule the work and confirm a start date. For larger jobs involving scaffold, we confirm scaffold erection dates separately. We contact you the working day before the start date to confirm the team is attending. On the day, the lead roofer will introduce themselves and walk through the planned work before starting. Any unexpected findings — structural timber problems, additional lead work required — are communicated immediately with a written price before any additional work is carried out. We don't make decisions on site without your knowledge and approval.
