The older village core of Birstall — Church Road, Birstall Street and the surrounding pre-1920 properties — represents a specialist roofing category distinct from the post-war estate housing that makes up much of wider Birstall. Cottages, Victorian semi-detached and Edwardian detached properties in the village core were built with traditional materials: clay plain tile, Welsh slate, lime mortar, natural stone and hand-dressed lead work. Modern roofing materials — concrete interlocking tile, cement mortar, synthetic slate — are not appropriate on these properties and in some cases may require planning consent if they materially change the character of the building. We don't make decisions on site without your knowledge and approval.
